I recently rebuilt the water pump on my SH and in addition to the bearings, seals, packing and felt washer I also replaced the impeller shaft. It was really grooved in the area where the packing contacts it. I bought a piece of O2 drill rod for a couple bucks, cut to length and milled the flat in it, new shaft. It took a pretty good pull on the arbor press to get the old shaft out and the new one in.
