Sam, like Alan told ya nearly allllllllllllll alternatoes UNLESS it was special made which is rare, are for negative ground so wire the battery n starter accordingly. When a tractor with an ammeter has its polarity reversed its leads need swapped or else it would read bass ackwards ya know and also on battery powered coil ignitions their polarity should match battery polarity i.e. if youre at negative gorund the coils + terminal is fed from the ignition switch and its other lil - terminal is what wires to the distributor. The starter still turns the same direction regardless.
