Mike – You can get a 12 volt generator the same dimensions as the old 6 volt unit and bolt right on. Or if you have the old 6 volt generator it can be reworked to provide 12 volts. Just remember you'll also need a new 12 volt regulator to match the generator. Replacement wiring harnesses are readily available – some look just like the original. The one’s I’ve seen from Agri-Services (www.wiringharnesses.com) are excellent but there’s other good ones out there. Or if you want to spend less, buy the appropriate (braided insulation) wire and tape and make your own harness. As you note 12 volt batteries to fit in the old box are readily available. As for “key switch” security with the OEM style pushbutton starter, you might install a key operated master cutoff switch (punch below) near to battery or starter. I’ve seen several on tractors at shows – they're unobtrustive and they work great.
