I used channel iron for mine,turned so the flat part of the channel is on the top,it is 5 or 6 inch I forget right now,the sides of the channel fit flush with the front and back of the axel housing,the channel spaced the fender up just right,and added alot more bracing for the fenders to mount to ,it is 12 or 14 inches long
