How good are you at bluffing? Sounds like your neighbor with the stuck M is looking to unload it and cut his losses. If you want the M, you need to make it look, to him at least, like he's winning until after the deal is cut. The way to do that is to figure out what else he wants. Does he want your A or does he need to be able to tell his wife he made a good deal on selling that M? One option is to buy his M for say $1500, less a repair adjustment (just between you and him) of $1000. That way he doesn't have to tell anyone about the adjustment.
