Hugh – I hate when that happens! ---- I’m not familiar with the 140 and it’s relatives. However it indeed sounds like the timing has gotten messed. And on the H and M tractors this happens when the cam drive gear key works loose and shears the key, or when the cam gear hub breaks. HOWEVER before going inside the engine, swap in a fresh set of spark plugs and see if it starts. Reason: In cool, damp weather I’ve had carburetor ice cause the engine to run rich and foul the plugs – the result being pretty much the symptoms you describe. If new plugs don’t help, do as Scotty suggests to see if the distributor is still in time with the crankshaft. If the timing is way out then somehow either the camshaft or distributor drive gears have jumped time – you’ll need to go inside the motor and find out which. Alternatively you can just leave your 140 right where it died. I’d be more than happy to run up there this weekend and haul it away for you(!) Good luck and keep us posted what you find! Bob
