TractorVet or others familiar with 1256 transmissi

Dad was using the 1256 today to load some bales, drove up to the stack and heard a pop or crack before shifting out of high range and into reverse... shifted to reverse, let out clutch and tractor died like it's stuck in two gears. No high range either, but will drive in low. All the linkages are connected and the two levers under the floor move like they should. Any thoughts? I appreciate any help!
