Hugh My Dad and I were in Springfield one time and it was raining went through a big puddle 350 chev 1970 it started running like you described. dried the cap still was that way, put a new timing chain on still had a problem it turned out the cap looked like it was dry but saterated with water, put on a new cap it fixed it.
