Sounds like when you last took it out of gear the shifter did but the tranny didn't. You may find you have to open up the tranny and line things back up. I have a tractor that will hang in a gear some times but if I put it back in that gear and shift it out again it shifts as it should. When even I park one I park it out of gear and make sure it is by letting the clutch out then shut it down. That way I know its out of gear. If you shifted it out of gear then started it then you could also have water/ice in the tranny and it frooze in gear
