I think your clutch let go, and is no longer releasing. That's also probably why the gearshift lever slipped out of the shifter fork. You were unknowingly "powershifting" the tractor, and the shift lever is just worn enough that it slipped out instead of pulling the (hard to move) fork and popping the tractor out of gear. If it's an M, you should be able to do a complete clutch and pressure plate job from underneath the tractor without splitting it.
