Run a 10-GA wire from the starter switch or solenoid to one terminal of the ammeter. (FROM the point where the (+) battery cable is attached.)

Connect the 10-GA wire from the alternator's output terminal AND ALL electrical loads to the ammeter's other terminal.

If the ammeter reads backwards, swap the connections betwen the terminals.
