I use 1N5408 diodes. Their ratings are OVERKILL for this application, but I have never seen one fail. (So far!) Typically, the staff at Radio Shaft give folks a dumbfounded stare when they ask for that part #, but they ARE readily available at industrial electronics places, and on the 'net. Is your's set up something like this?
