I agree with you 100% the lack of a lamp, diode, or resistor IN ITSELF will not cause the battery to drain with the switch off. HOWEVER, since he has been running it that way, he MAY have fried the regulator and/or the diode trio. What do you have against the diode system? I have been using all three methods... the "idiot light", the diode, and the resistor for 25 or more years, and have found all three methods to work equally well, with NO problems that can be attributed to one setup over the other.
The IMPORTANT thing is not WHICH method is used, but, rather that ONE of the methods is used, rather than connecting the #1 "switched excite" terminal DIRECTLY to the switched side of the ignition, which 100% guarantees alternator failure, sooner or later.
