Steve, If you think your problem is spark timing, I would suggest the Case/IH tune-up specification booklet as a place to start for your tractor's ignition settings. When I check and set ignition timing for the first time on a specific tractor, I try to determine the engine's configuration. For example on an IH C-264 engine, what pistons does it have -- flat top, fire-crater, high altitude? Which cylinder head -- one for kerosene, gasoline, LP-Gas? Also, what spark advance curve is in the distributor? This needs to match the engine configuration. When I think I know the configuration and the engine otherwise looks mechanically sound, I then use the Case/IH tune-up book to make ignition settings. Since most of us don't know the actual history on many older tractors, "customized changes" in an engines past can create "interesting" problems. A good tractor mechanic is handy to have around at such times. Especially, one familiar with the tractor model in question. Hope this helps some. Mark
