Tom: Those of us who farmed all our lives have long since learned to excuse poll in place of pole or vice versa. About 1960 we got both pole barns and polled herefords. That one did cause a fair bit of confusion for some years. The real confusion erupted when we couldn't decide whether the polled hereford or the politician filled the manure spreader. Years ago here in Canada, our then Prime Minister visited a plowing match. All public address communication for plowing match had been done at ground level. It was felt the Prime minister should have a platform, thus one of the equipment exhibitors volunteered a manure spreader. The Prime Minister started by saying this was the first time he had ever addressed an audience from a manure spreader. A voice in the back yelled," Lester and this is the spreader's first load of manure."
