Janicholson, you're a GENIUS... That's absolutely CORRECT, and I should have caught that LED thing! The regulator was designed to work with a #194 lamp, or equivalent resistance in the circuit, limiting current flow to protect the regulator, yet flowing enough current to magnetize the rotating field enough to "excite" the alternator. You are certainly CORRECT in saying the LED doesn't use enough current to function in this circuit! The only thing I can say to redeem myself is that if he did the voltage checks as I suggested, the problem of not enough voltage to the #1 "switched excite" terminal would have shown up. SIMPLE fix... connect a 10 Ohm, 10 Watt wirewound ceramic power resistor across the LED. The LED SHOULD still light, and the resistor will pass enough current to "excite" the alternator.
