What system does it have the old style open center or the PFC ????? If it the old style then remove the top link plate and get a trouble lite and look inside on the right you will see a arm (lever) comming up from the bottom and a arm (lever) hanging down from the top . the one on top has to be on the back side of the one from the bottom , it is wise to use a hook to pull the top one back and hook it over the other one as there will be heavy spring resistance and there maybe some real sharp edges . Now if it is a later model 1086 then it will have the PFC system and here it could be a 100 differant things so if that is the case then your at the dealer's mercey .

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
