I would find a part of the head the prottrudes from the block and do like you said, whack it with a hammer and piece of oak. I would use a 2lb sledge and start off with a decent whack.
Then I would do it to the other end and go back and forth repeatedly. With time and increasing strength in blows it should loosen it up. Dont get too crazy with the hammer!! Make sure u arent missing some hardware to remove.
