Here is my take on it.
There are few parts available (one can find some gears, but no housings. Disassemble and clean with carb cleaner to bare metal (include the strainer in that) the cap (covering the gears) is usually worn some where the gears press against it, laeving a mark. This needs to be flat sanded out with 240 silicon carbide paper on a piece of glass (flat). move the cover in random directions and press down evenly while sanding. change to 400 grit to finish it nicely. Use a feeler gauge set to assess the clearance between the gears and the side of the housing. if it is more than .0015" between them, I would try to get a better housing. The cover to gear distance should be set with very thin gaskets (some are available) these should allow only .001 to .0008" clearance between gear and cover. Can be checked with plastigauge. When finished, put liberal amounts of engine assembly grease/lube in the gears and housing (including the shaft/housing area. This assists in the priming of the pump on first startup.
