It's pretty sad that these materials, some (actually quite a bit) over 50 years old are not in the public domain. I think it would keep alot of the old iron around. I know its not much money, but an old farmer who spends his money on a tractor, then having to spend more money when a problem arises, then more money on a service manual, might just say screw it and let it sit and rust away. I know its not likely, but I'm sure it happens. Why else is there tractors going to rot. People may not have the know how to fix them, but given a nice book that helps, can go a long way. And where do people go to get parts, most likely the dealer. I will never buy a service manual, I will part my tractor out before that. I can go to my local library and get any repair info on most cars from haynes/chiltons, and so on, but there is no books on repairing tractors (That I know of, might have to check it out). CaseIH, cant seriosuly be making much on these licenses, they already rape you for the cost of parts (and yes I have purchased dealer parts unfortunately, then seen them new on ebay for 1/2 the price). I would think it would encourage people to fix there old tractors with DEALER parts. I guess its all about sucking as much money out of IH diehards that they can. Maybe one day all this old literature will be public domain.... maybe one day... when case gets bought out by someone else.. maybe.. =(

A Question for Dads This recent topic from the Tractor Talk discussion board is being highlighted because it is an awesome display of the caliber of individuals that have made this site their own. The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
