Jim, I did a little quick research in my parts books. I checked part numbers for the rear axles, axle bearings, bull gears, bull pinions, bull pinion bearings, ring gear and pinion, and differential bearings. All are identical between 856 and 826. I didn"t get into the range box or the speed transmission/TA at all, but I"m sure there are minor variations somewhere, probably most having to do with the early 856. Remember, the 856 came out about two years before the 826. Sometime during the producton of the 56 series, the angle of the teeth on a couple gears were changed. One was the hyd pump drive gear. I have heard a 1066 run with a 706 pump driven gear, makes a hell of a noise. I beleive all 826"s had the late-style gears. Another difference is the axle housings on an early 856. The bull pinion bearing quill is to the inside, requiring the rear axle housing to be removed if you need to service the shaft or bearings. The 826/late 856 have the quill on the outside, which is extremly nice as you can shim up the bearings easily if they get loose enough that the shaft takes out the seals and causes an oil leak into the brakes. Another difference- the axle housings were a totally seperate compartment from the rear end housing on the early 856"s. They had their own drain and fill plugs. They can be updated by removing the axle housings and drilling a 1/2" hole at the bottom of the rear end housing to allow oil out to the axles. Late 56"s and all 26"s had that hole from the factory.
