I do not know what might causw the pressure. All systems I know of are open to the atmosphere with a breather. I would argue with you on the use of steel wool as it is a sevier contaminant in a hydraulic/gear system of the worst kind. (I beileve in your intentions, not your material) Rolled up screen wire into a tight tube would be much safer. Is the fluid yellowish and or chocolate colored? if so it may be water in the fluid that is expanding causing the pressure and discharge as it trys to boil in a moose like consistancy. Look in the on line parts manual for the breather, if it is there, maybe it needs cleaned, or replaced. Good luck, JimN
