The most common cause for this is bad rings. The oil consumption is now noticeable because the valve job raised the compression, as they are no longer leaking. Now the worn rings have more blowby, and the worn oil rings can't make up for it. If it is really smoking badly, all the time, then I would suspect the oil passage to the rocker shaft is leaking through the head gasket to a cylinder. The head, block and gasket must be very clean when assembled, and a light coating of sealer helps. I use aluminum spray paint on the gasket, and apply it when still tacky. If it only smokes when first started, the valve guides are suspect. If it really smokes badly when you get to the bottom of a hill, and the governor kicks in to pull again, I would suspect the rings. Take off the oil filler when it is running, and see if you are getting a lot of blowby. My cub has so much blowby that when I take off the filler, oil splashes out.
