If your muffler is in good condition, install a reducer bushing in the manifold (if you can find one). If your current muffler is getting a little long in the tooth, get a new 2-1/2" muffler.

ALL the new mufflers are loud these days because they're straight through with absolutely no baffling to speak of. You'll gain a couple of HP with the bigger stack, though.

A good set of hearing protectors is the best remedy for a loud tractor. I don't think pointing the exhaust forward will make much difference.
