Points can look good and still be bad. Also with leaveing the switch on you may have burned the points enough to have to reset the point gap which will also cause problems. Or as the other guy say the condenser may be bad. One other then you said the wiring burned up. Well then the little insulator going into the distubutor may have got hot and cracked it so now after it has run for a little bit if gets warm and opens up that crack and shorts out so then its a no go again. Or one other thnig the switch maybe going bad because of leaving it turned on and it got hot
