Is the coil primary connected properly? AS in a positive ground system would have the + terminal connected to the distributor "hot" connection. May make a difference. Try pulling at wires which feed the coil from the ignition switch down to the distributor. There may have been a terminal connection which got overheated when the switch was left on. This is not likely, but you need to check all primary wiring. Our SMTA had the coil primary feed wire break inside the insulation where it goes over the valve cover. Check it all out.
