Make the connection at the pickup first. Connect to battery cable at starter switch on the tractor. Just before you want to start cranking, make the final connection to the frame.

What you want to be careful of is any sparks near either battery. Make sure you have good connections at the pickup before connecting to the tractor. Always match polarity, positive to positive and negative to negative. If you can make the connection at the pickup someplace other than the battery that would be safer too.
