If turning the engine to a new location on the ring gear does no good, (and the starter is making the very bad grinding noise (like the engine was already running) then I believe cleaning and lubing the drive should work (at a new location on the flywheel) If it is just free wheeling like no teeth are trying to mesh, it may be a low battery, bad cables, or the starter is in need of a set of brushes and bushings. Pull the starter out and connect the big lead to it from the starter switch. Use a jumper cable to ground the frame of the starter to the frame of the tractor. Hold onto the starter with two pair of vice grip pliers, because when it is energized, it will jump dramatically. While holding onto it, and watching the drive pinion, have someone hit the starter button (briefly) The pinion should fly out to the end of the shaft and scare the boogers out of you in the process. If it just starts to spin and goes faster and faster (not too violent) it needs to be repaired. JimN
