Doug; after re-reading your 1st post the thing I got to thinking about was your comment about "valves by the shifter".If what your talking about is like the 2nd picture JJ posted, those are the actual valve bodies the controll levers are hooked to that are shown in the 1st pic JJ posted. The shaft that extendes from the valve body controlls the flow for either single or double action cyls. Turn ccw, or up for double action(pressure both ways) or cw for single action. Now if you have hyd lines going to both ends of all hyd cyls they are double action, and the control valve pin should be set accordingly. Your loader should be getting its hyd power from the two ports on each side of the tractor, usually with quick disconnects on them. If this isnt the case,someone has rigged another system.
