At cranking speed, the mag's impulse retards ("lags") the timing. Once the engine speeds up a few hundres RPM's, the impulse "kicks out", and the mag jumps ahead to running timing all at once. When you use a timing light with the engine running, you will be seeing "running timing" (advanced). From that figure, you subtract the "lag angle", which will get you back to a timing, at cranking, of about TDC. Setting the impulse timing to earlier than TDC will break your cranking arm, or break the "nose cone" off of the starter. That's why you would need to know the impulse's "lag angle, if using a timing light with the engine running, so as not to get the timing earlier than TDC at cranking.
