Your repacement seal will be an ordinary looking oil seal, probably 1/4" to 3/8" thick. It should be a double lip style with a spring inside the larger lip. Install the spring side to the oil. This is opposite the original but the sping will rust off if installed toward the front. The original front crankshaft seal was a leather/felt combination about an inch thick. The felt was toward the front to serve as a dust seal and the lip of the leather seal also faced the front rather than facing the oil side. IH engineering must have been more concerned about keeping dirt from being blown in from the fan than they were about oil leaks. On the otherhand, it is very rare to see the front seal leak unless the main bearings are really worn or the crankcase ventilation system is restricted.
