I try to start my tractors and pickup at least every six months. I have done this for four years now without any problems. When I start them I make sure to let them completely warm up, and I don't just let them sit and idle, I move the throttle up and down throughout the ten or fifteen minutes they are run. If you want to prep for storage for a long, long time - put about three tablespoons of two-cycle oil in each cylinder and spin the engine over with the plugs out a little bit. Another thing that some like to use is the fogger meant for seasonal (boat, jetski, etc) engines. It never hurts to give the engine a few complete revolutions every once in a while, either.
