When you install the new seal be sure to coat the outside metal side with gasket sealer. It helps if the metal surfaces are pitted or warped. Be sure to slip fit the new seal before you install it too. If it is something like the front crank seal then you'll have the timing cover off anyway. Clean and polish the crank end up with a fine emery paper and coat it with oil. Lubricate the seal and slide it on and test how it fits on the shaft. Sometimes those old felt seals, when full of dirt and goo, will hold abrasives like dirt, sand and itsy little rocks that will wear down the shaft and cause a dip in it. If you find that the new seal just barley grabs in that area then go to a seal shop and have them find you a better fitting seal OR take a ball bearing and set it in the backside of the seal after it is installed in the front cover and tap it with a hammer all of the way around the circumference of the seal. This will spread it just slightly and take up a little of the slack but it will only take up a couple thousandths if that and you have to be careful to not get it out of round too.
