Larry, some folks say you can remove the PTO and get to from the hole at rear of tractor. I have not tried this as it just seems as easy to me to remove the deck and get to it from the top. I suspect it isn't easy to get the bull gear back on through that hole. As for the bearings if they look to be good they probably are and I wouldn't hesitate to use the same bearings, but that is totally up to your judgement. The axle will not come off without removing the bull gear from the inside. Makes a great Christmas project.
