Put the gauge on the worn part. That is where it will be when running. If you get it on the high spot they will be noisy. I set the valves with each piston on tdc. Runnlng mates are 1&6 , 2&5, 3&4. When you are setting #1, #6 will be between ex & in. Then turn it enough so #2 is between ex & in and set #5. Do this with all in the firing order which is 1 5 3 6 2 4. I would pull the rockers and clean up the tips on my valve grinding machine.
