I've worked my '52 M pretty hard, toughest is pulling 3 bottoms through this black clay. It's just tired; a little blue smoke now and then and plenty of blow-by. The sheet metal is quite good though and I'm thinking about it for a restoration candidate. I'll keep it running while I build on of the other two.
I wouldn't be surprised if IH never did actually make the pistons themselves.
Do you happen to know what kind of rings you are using? I suspect the originals were chrome faced but I've seen adds for moly faced rings. I've had good luck with moly rings in auto applications. They don't like dirt though.
