Way back in the dark ages BEFORE negative ground became the standard Ford and other Pos ground people believed there would be less galvanic corrossion where frame members met at Pos ground. Theres also the thing about spark plug polarity where its easier to emit electtrons from a hotter electrode tip to a relatively cooler ground strap. A genny can still charge at EITHER polarity provided its polarized and ammeter n coil leads need to match your battery polarity.
