Good question. When I got my fathers SA it didnt have a spring but it looked like it did at one time. Since then I have looked as a lot of Super A's and not one of them has had a spring on it. On mine...in front of that slideing pipe about an inch is a large washer welded to the lift arm that is a stop for the spring. The "stop" was allready there so I assumed it either came that way or was added later after the arm bent. I have seen a few others that have a clamp there in place of where my washer/stop was welded. Now, if that clamp was a stop for the spring there must have been a washer or something else on there because the clamp wasnt wide enough to be used as a stop for the spring. If you will send me an email Ill send you a pic of my SA and you can see the spring on mine. Its easier than trying to explain it. On the end of your rod there should be two nuts there instead of just one.
