OK, I'll back up and start from the begining. First off, The timing gears in the engine need to be in time. Marks on the cam gear lined up with the crank gear, then the marks on the governor/magneto gear lined up with the cam gear. If they haven't been removed, they are probably OK. Then the internal gears of the magneto need to be lined up. There should be marks showing on these gears. In fact, there are 2 marks. One for clockwise rotation, one for counterclockwise. I think the double set of marks is only on one gear and you line the appropriate one up with the single mark on the other gear. I think the correct mark is a "C," although I suppose it could be an "R." Then to install the magneto: Turn the engine until it is coming up on compression on cylinder one and continue turning (much less than 1/2 revolution) until the 0 timing mark on the flywheel is at the pointer. Turn the magneto drive clockwise until the impulse clicks with the rotor pointing to the tower for cylinder 1. Maintaining the coupling in as close to this position as possible, install the magneto on the engine and rotate the top of the magneto towards the engine block. Crank the engine over 1 revolution, bringing the timing mark back to the pointer. Slowly rotate the magneto (top away from the block) JUST until the impulse clicks. Give the engine one full revolution and while turning it very slowly check to see that the impulse clicks just as the mark comes into alignment. Make especially sure that it doesn't trip before the mark reaches the pointer.
