The TA was an optional transmission attachment that gives you two speeds in each transmission gear. It can be shifted on the move, under load, without depressing the clutch pedal or otherwise interupting the flow of power from the engine to the wheels. When the lever is in the forward position, the unit is in direct drive, there is no reduction. When the lever is pulled back, the unit is in TA, and there is about a 33% reduction in gear speed. This of course gives you more pulling power. When you get through the tough spot, you throw the lever back ahead to increase your ground speed. The TA's used in the smaller tractors with the 5-speed transmission (Super MTA, 300, 400, 330, 350, 450, 340, 460, 560, 660, 606, 544, 656, 666, 686) are the mechanical type and will freewheel downhill when the lever is in the rear position. The hydraulic TA in your 806 should not freewheel, but it is doing so because someone did not know how to operate it and fried the brake pack.
