for the 685 that was not shifting into all 4 speeds (also added to original discussion): i opened the cover enough to see inside, looked inside, all looked well. i added the bolts that were missing, and freed up the counter-shift-shaft/pivot interlock shaft that was stuck (maybe why the bolts were removed). after i put it all together, it still wouldnt shift. then i used brute force with the tractor running(for a constant oil bath), and suddenly got one gear, then the other to return. seems the detent balls or possibly the sliding gear were corroded from sitting or non use. all good now, clicks in and out perfectly. it's awesome having all 4 gears now. might find the real tractor inside this highway machine yet!
