The nut on the end of the steering shaft may be loose, which allows the worm gear to move up or down the shaft. The teeth on the mating gear may be worn excessively. The gears on the 400, could be turned to use the teeth on the other side that are not worn. The SM may have the half gear. The shaft has a universal joint in it that may have some slop in it. They all add up to make the whole system sloppy. SDE
