Bob, I completley overhauled my transmission on my '50 Cub, actually removing all the guts a couple of times trying to solve a clicking sound. There should only be the two "poppet" balls in there of that size. Perhaps someone pulled it apart without being careful to keep track of them and they fell in the case. There is one ball bearing type bearing for one of the shafts but if it were missing two balls out of its cage you would certailnly hear it.
