I re-read your post and Neb. Kirk's. The grease is probably 100% of the problem. Follow Kirks suggestions and you will have to have a Handle in order to snap it over center. When properly working and adjusted it will take a firm quick pull to snap it in and out of gear. For baling or mowing it is a god send to have one of these. dont remove it unless you really have to and as you suspect, it is a real job to remove it.
