Brad - If you can find one, a tach and drive assembly from a later model Farmall with the "start on gas" diesel (eg. 450D or W450) could be adapted.
If you are clever with electronics you could take an electronic car tach and use the breaker points inside the MD mag or distributor for the RPM signal. This would require a bit of engineering however - it would not be a simple "attach the signal wire here" hookup.
Or if you MD has had the generator replaced with an alternator, a "universal diesel electronic tach" would be easy to install. Isspro, Datcon and others make 'em....
