Dave. The only place a flare fitting seals is between the open end of the flare, and the bevel of the fitting it goes into. The remainder of the fitting is to apply uniform pressure to this flare. Those parts do not seal anything and putting material on them is a waste of time. Pull the flare out of the fitting and use a hand magnifying lense to look at the inside surface of the flare, and the beveled surface in the fitting for ridges or small defects. Polish these out if found, the flare should compress from the force of the fitting. Thus there should be about 45 to 50 pounds of force on a 7 inch "line" wrench (a line wrench looks like a thick box end with the end cut out of it to allow it to go on the line) JimN
