Allan did not say why you need a coil. The internal wires of the windings are very small gauge and sometimes if you have a break in the wire it will stay connected when the coil is cold but when the heat of the engine warms it up it will expand, opens the break, you loose the connection and spark stops. An unusual problem, but have had two or three engines (boat, tractor, etc) act this way over the course of 30 years.
