I have a '40 H that was originally a kerosene model. When I rebuilt it, it got firecrater pistons (std. alt.), a gas head, and a SH cam grind. This made a noticeable difference in the power output and I don't think that it will affect the drive train reliability.
If you don't replace the head (or mill a bunch off )you are wasting your time. Most of the compression increase came from the new head. The difference between the H and SH cams is about 0.020".
