The two springs hold the impeller shaft forward so that it does not rub on the back side of the impeller. The water pump has two ball bearings that support the pulley but, unlike modern pumps, the impeller shaft is carried on a brass sleeve type bearing. That is why there are two grease zerks. On lubes the two ball bearings. The other lubes the impeller shaft bushing. If you over grease the bushing the excess is forced into the coolant. If you do not grease it, the coolant will get in between the shaft and bushing and cause corrosion and rapid wear. Missing or broken springs will also allow the coolant to replace the grease more quickly.
