Almost all alternators are 12v. So that is not a concern. If the coil is resistorless type as you indicate, the start then quit issue could be in which wire is connected to the coil. Trace the wire/s from the coil going to the rest of the tractor. If one of the wires goes to the solenoid I terminal, it should be disconnected at both ends and not used with that coil. The only wire should be the wire going from the coil to the ignition switch I or Ign terminal. It should be on when the key is in the run position, and on when in the start position. The wire should be 14ga or 12 ga thickness. Good luck, JimN
